Storia

"This Cocktail also has a direct line to the Martinez cocktail, minus the bitters and maraschino.
The gin and it was actually ordered in the Hoffman House and other New York bars of the 1880s and '90, simply as a Sweet Martini, and later as a Gin and Italian.
During Prohibition, gin and italian was shortened to gin & it."

Dalle mie ricerche su ricettari a mia disposizione, ho potuto così verificare che il nome compare su manuali datati dal 1930 in poi.
Un esempio è il libro di Charles of Delmonicos "Punches and Cocktails" datato 1934.

Gin and Italian
In a shaker pour two parts dry gin, one third Italian Vermouth, juice of one quarter of an orange and a sprig of mint.
Fill with ice, shake well and strain into cocktail glass.

Come il manuale di Frank Meier "The Artistry of Mixing Drinks" datato 1936 che in questo caso avrà il nome abbreviato in "Gin & It".

GIN & IT
Gin and Italian.
In cocktail glass:
Half Gin,
Half Italian Vermouth
Should not be iced.

"In Europe the proportions used are half and half and the drink is not iced."

The World's Drinks And How To Mix Them".
Nell'ultimo paragrafo dedicate ai "SOME NEW UP TO NOW SEDUCTIVE AMERICAN COCKTAIL"

This popular appetizer derives its title from a combination of the first syllable of the word Vermouth and the monosyllable gin; i.e., Ver Gin, and is a mixture of equal parts Cinzano Vermouth and Coates Plymounth gin, with a dash of orange bitters and a twist of lemon peel added.
This drink must served very cold.
